BAF Durga Puja
A brief history
The uniqueness of our Puja ’Helsinki Durga Puja’ is highlighted by the fact that this Puja is observed in the northernmost capital of the world. Helsinki is the northernmost capital of the countries in this planet ‘Earth’. The other significant fact that this was the first Durga Puja in Finland also contribute to its uniqueness.
The number of Bengalis in Finland in the beginning and mid-90-s of the past century was very few. However, since Finland joined the EU in 1995, the number started gradually growing. Thus, in one Autumn evening few Bengalis met in 1999 and decided to celebrate the Durga Puja festival and named it ‘Helsinki Durga Puja’. In 2022, we celebrated the Puja 24th time. In the beginning we did not have a ‘Pratima’ and substituted it by a ‘Pot’- a painting by a Finnish woman, a friend of one of our compatriots. However, we managed to get a Durga Pratima in 2003 with the sincere efforts of one of our Bengali enthusiasts, whose contribution to the inception of the Durga Puja in Helsinki was enormous. Now as the numbers of Bengalis grew, there are 4 Pujas being observed in the capital city area of Finland. But ours’ Helsinki Durga Puja was the pioneer.
With the efforts from many sincere activists and under the able organizing capability of BAF (Bengali Association of Finland) we are moving ahead, increasing the Puja cultural activities, literary capabilities and socialization qualitatively and quantitatively every time. Every year we eagerly wait for this festival so close to our heart, which best exhibits of our food, culture, thoughts etc. Apart from celebrating Puja through the traditional rituals, song and dance, the BAF also prepares a special Puja magazine called Srijan, where Bengalis receive an opportunity to exhibit their creative side. আমাদের পূজা ‘হেলসিঙ্কি দুর্গাপূজা’ বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে উত্তরের রাজধানীতে পালিত হয়। পৃথিবীর দেশগুলোর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে উত্তরের রাজধানী হেলসিঙ্কি। ফিনল্যান্ডে এটিই প্রথম দুর্গাপূজা ছিল, এ ঘটনাটিও এর অনন্যতায় অবদান রাখে।
গত শতাব্দীর শুরুতে এবং নব্বই দশকের মাঝামাঝি ফিনল্যান্ডে বাঙালির সংখ্যা ছিল খুবই কম। ফিনল্যান্ড ১৯৯৫ সালে EU তে যোগদানের পর থেকে সংখ্যাটি ধীরে ধীরে বাড়তে শুরু করে। এইভাবে, ১৯৯৯ সালে একটি শরতের সন্ধ্যায় কয়েকজন বাঙালি মিলিত হয় এবং দুর্গাপূজা উত্সব উদযাপন করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেই এবং এর নামকরণ করা হয় 'হেলসিঙ্কি দুর্গা পূজা'। সুতরাং, এ বছর আমরা ২৪ তম পূজা উদযাপন করছি। শুরুতে আমাদের 'প্রতিমা' ছিল না এবং এটি একটি 'পট' দ্বারা প্রতিস্থাপিত হয়েছিল - যা ছিল আমাদের একজন ফিনিশ বন্ধুর একটি চিত্রকর্ম। পরবর্তী কালে আমাদের একজন বাঙালি উত্সাহীর আন্তরিক প্রচেষ্টায় ২০০৩ সালে একটি দুর্গাপ্রতিমা পেতে সক্ষম হয়েছিলাম, যার অবদান ছিল হেলসিঙ্কিতে দুর্গা পূজার সূচনায় বিশাল। এখন বাঙালির সংখ্যা বাড়ার সাথে সাথে ফিনল্যান্ডের রাজধানী শহর এলাকায় ৪টি পূজা অনুষ্ঠিত হচ্ছে। কিন্তু আমাদের হেলসিঙ্কি দুর্গাপূজা ছিল অগ্রগামী।
অনেক আন্তরিক কর্মীর প্রচেষ্টায় এবং বিএএফ (বেঙ্গলি অ্যাসোসিয়েশন অফ ফিনল্যান্ড) এর সক্ষম সাংগঠনিক সক্ষমতার অধীনে আমরা প্রতিবার গুণগত ও পরিমাণগতভাবে পূজার সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ড, সাহিত্যিক সক্ষমতা এবং সামাজিকীকরণ বৃদ্ধি করে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছি। প্রতি বছর আমরা আমাদের হৃদয়ের খুব কাছে এই উত্সবের জন্য অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করি, যা আমাদের খাদ্য, সংস্কৃতি, চিন্তাভাবনা ইত্যাদির সেরা প্রদর্শন করে। ঐতিহ্যবাহী আচার-অনুষ্ঠান, গান ও নাচের মাধ্যমে পূজা উদযাপন করার পাশাপাশি, বিএএফ সৃজন নামে একটি বিশেষ পূজা পত্রিকাও প্রস্তুত করে, যেখানে বাঙালিরা তাদের সৃজনশীল দিক প্রদর্শনের সুযোগ পায়। ২০২০ সালে, যখন বিএএফ ভার্চুয়ালি পূজার আয়োজন করেছিল, তখন চন্দ্রবিন্দু বিজয়া দশমী উপলক্ষে একটি অনলাইন কনসার্ট করেছিল।

Durga Puja 2022: হেলসিঙ্কির কনকনে ঠান্ডা উপেক্ষা করেই রস্কা-ময় রঙিন পুজো!
অক্টোবর আর নভেম্বর মাসে ফিনল্যান্ডের প্রকৃতি হয়ে ওঠে মোহময়, রঙিন। এই সময়টাকে এদেশের লোক রস্কা নামে চেনে। আদতে সে আমাদের চেনা বাংলার শরত । হেলসিঙ্কিতে ঠিক এই সময় করে আগমন হয় মা দূর্গার। হেলসিঙ্কির ঠান্ডা উপেক্ষা করেই বাড়ছে পুজোর পারদ।
ঋতুপর্ণা ভট্টাচার্য: রস্কার আগমন ঘটছে ফিনল্যান্ডে | প্রকৃতি সেজে উঠেছে শরতের রঙ্গে। বাঙালির শরত এবং বিদেশি অটাম এই সময় মিলেমিশে একাকার হয়ে যায় ফিনল্যান্ডে। ঠিক সেই সময় হেলসিঙ্কিতে আগমন হয় মা দূর্গার। হেলসিঙ্কির বেঙ্গলি এসোসিয়েশনের তখন পুজো শুরুর সাজো সাজো রব। ১৯৯৮ সাল থেকে শুরু হওয়া এই পুজোর মূলমন্ত্রই হল মিলন। একেবারে শুরুর দিকে যে প্রতিমা দিয়ে পুজো শুরু হয়েছিল। সেই প্রতিমা ডোনেশন করে দেওয়া হয়েছে মিউজিয়ামে। তারপর থেকেই একে ঘিরে বেশ কয়েকদিন ধরে স্থায়ী এগজিবিশন চলে এখানে।
প্রায় দুশো মানুষের সমাগমে সেই সময় গম গম করে পুজো মণ্ডপ। আয়োজনে রীতিমতো কোনও কমতি রাখেন না এখানকার লোকজন । প্রত্যেকবছর পুজোতে প্রকাশিত হয় ম্যাগাজিন। ম্যাগাজিনের নাম সৃজন। আগে এই একটিমাত্র পুজো হত গোটা অঞ্চল জুড়ে। এখন বাংলাদেশিদের পুজোও শুরু হয়েছে এখানে । ভোগ, সন্ধিপুজো, ধুনোর গন্ধ সব মিলিয়ে এই চারদিন একেবারে আনন্দে মজে থাকেন সকলে। কবিতা, নাচ,গান ঘরোয়া আসরে জমে ওঠে পুজোর সন্ধেগুলো। নস্টালজিক আবহাওয়া যেন নিয়ে চলে যায় অন্য আমেজে।
পুজোর অনেক দিন আগে থেকেই প্রস্তুতি পর্ব শুরু হয়ে যায় এলাকায়। পুজোর শুরটা তাই একসঙ্গে মিলে কাটে বেশ জমজমাটি। বিদেশি থেকে স্বদেশী শারদোৎসবের কোন সীমারেখা নেই পৃথিবী জুড়ে। পরিযায়ী জীবনে মুখ বদলেছে অনেকের। সেই তালিকায় এসেছে নতুনের মুখ। তবে পুজোর এই সময়টুকু সকলে সব ভুলে নিজেদের মতো করে মেতে ওঠে আনন্দে। পুজোর এই চারটে দিন হইচই করেই কাটে এলাকার মানুষদের। আসা যাওয়ার নিবিড় পথ ধরেই যেন মা সকলের দুঃখ দুর্দশার কাটিয়ে দেন এই কটা দিন। ফিনল্যান্ডের কনকনে ঠান্ডা মনের উত্তাপ ঠেকিয়ে রাখতে পারেনি কোনদিনই। আগামীতেও পারবে না এমনই আস্থা এলাকাবাসীর। এই ঠাণ্ডা উপেক্ষা করেও এই পুজোর পারদ চড়ে রয়েছে ফিনল্যান্ডের এলাকা জুড়ে।

Durga Puja goes global: From Finland to Colombia to Nigeria and more
Durga Puja has come a long way (quite literally) since the first ever barowari puja in Hooghly’s Guptipara in 1790, with Bengal’s favourite festival becoming a truly international affair in the third decade of the 21st century. While pujas in the UK and the US have been common ever since the early 2000s, the last few years have seen newer shores welcome Durga and her retinue every autumn, even in countries not known for a large Indian diaspora.
After two years of hybrid or no puja due to Covid-19, 2022 is all set to witness in-person celebrations of Durga Puja across the world. My Kolkata takes a quick tour of six such overseas locations where festivities are about to begin in a few days’ time.
Helsinki, Finland
The northernmost puja on the planet will observe its 24th celebration this year in Helsinki. Having started off as an impromptu puja arranged by a few expat Bengalis in 1999, the Helsinki Durga Puja, now organised by the Bengali Association of Finland (BAF), has steadily increased in size and stature over the last decade. The first few editions of this puja involved worshipping a pot painted in the likeness of Durga by a Finnish woman. Then, in 2003, sincere efforts of local Bengalis resulted in the inaugural pratima, which has since been supplemented with Bengali food, cultural events and an ever-growing accumulation of devotees each year. Apart from celebrating Puja through the traditional rituals, song and dance, the BAF also prepares a special Puja magazine called Srijan, where Bengalis receive an opportunity to exhibit their creative side. After all the uncertainty, planning & online meetings we are finally getting together for our first physical event organized by the Bengali Association of Finland Ry in 2021.
Due to the covid situation this year, Durgapuja is being organized with a few limitations.We apologize for any inconvenience caused and request each one of you attending the event to be socially responsible and make this event a success.
Please remember to only visit the venue either on Saturday, 16th October or Sunday, 17th October as per your date choice at the time of registration and show your EU covid certificate at the entrance. Please maintain hand hygiene with sanitizers and wearing a facemask is compulsory within the venue as per THL guideline, except while eating or taking a quick snap. If you or your kid(s) develop any flu (sordi/kashi/hachi/etc) like symptoms, you should not come to the event. In that case, we will refund your contribution.
